About

Bayfront Health Port Charlotte's neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) provides exceptional care for critically ill or premature infants. A special affiliation with the All Children’s Neonatology/Johns Hopkins Medicine enables us to provide neonatologists from All Children’s Hospital along with other clinical resources that enhance the quality of care and increase the safety of newborn babies that have higher acuity levels.

Our NICU is able to care for premature babies who weigh 2 lbs. 4 oz. or more. Our specially trained neonatal care professionals utilize the latest technological advances to deliver expert diagnosis and treatment. The NICU provides care for:

  • Premature infants
  • Birth defects and genetic syndromes
  • Gastrointestinal disorders
  • Infections or sepsis
  • Kidney disorders
  • Major neonatal surgical needs
  • Respiratory disorders

We encourage family members to visit and participate in the care of their baby. Our staff understands the importance of soothing skin-to-skin contact between our NICU babies and their parents, which promotes healing, comfort and creates a bond. During your visits, our neonatal nurses will help you learn how to care for your baby so you are comfortable taking care of your newborn at home.

Giving babies access to the advanced care they need.

Bayfront Health operates a State-approved, level III, regional perinatal intensive care center, one of only 11 in all of Florida. This is the highest level of technology and expertise available to newborns who need special care and is located in St. Petersburg. Level II NICU's are available at both Port Charlotte and spring Hill.
